Can I use essential oils to make my boots smell less boot-like?

they make these wooden that you can drop into shoes to make them smell better. You can just coat an essential oil on the wooden and they will freshen up your shoes. I wish I could think of the real name of them but I havent seen them in stores (except the plastic ones that use chemical deodorizers) but I know they make them.
